Edward Solly, Berlin "Maso di Banco war einer der begabtesten Schüler Giottos. Wenn auch seine Jungfrau mit Kind von den byzantinischen Vorbildern beeinflusst wird, sehen wir dennoch den Versuch, seine Figuren zu humanisieren. Der Blick der Jungfrau ist voller Liebe zu ihrem Sohn, während dieser sich sehr realistisch an seine Mutter klammert."
English: Maso di Banco, The Virgin and Child, panel on poplar, 81,5 x 49,2 cm, pointed arch, Florence 1335-36, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Gemäldegalerie, bought from Coll. of Edward Solly, Berlin, in 1821. 'Maso di Banco was one of Giottos most talented pupils. Although his Virgin and Child follows the byzantine formula one recognizes his effort to humanize his figures. The gaze of the Virgin is full of love for her son, while he clings to her very realistically.'
