Summary
[edit]DescriptionMazinaw Rock 1926.jpg |
English: This photo shows the magnificent Mazinaw Rock as it appeared in the winter of 1926. Notice the few trees on the top of the Rock.
Logging deforested much of the region at the turn of the century, followed by tremendous forest fires which burned the slash from the deforestation. It's said that as much as eight feet of top soil was consumed in places by these fires. The resulting ash eventually washed into the various waters of the Mazinaw area leaving great tree roots exposed along the shore lines which can still be seen in places. The Group of Seven painted pictures of this area of Ontario depicting the land devoid of trees due to the fires. |
