Summary

[edit]
Description

A male figure made by the Mbole people at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States.

Made of wood in the late 1800s or early 1900s.

The Mbole live in central Africa in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Lilwa was a strictly hierarchical, all-male organization which carried out various economic, educational, judicial, political and ritual functions in Mbole society.

This kind of figure, known as an ofika, was critical to initiation into the Lilwa, and to enforcement of Lilwa codes. The ofika represents a criminal ritually hanged for violating Lilwa codes of behavior. This particular figure is encrusted with palm oil and ash. This imitates how Mbole people would also cover themselves with the same mixture during burial rites.
