Notes |
English: Medal minted in honor of King Sigismund III (1566-1632). On the reverse side of the goddess Thetis with a model of vessel on her head and Cerera with a cornucopia and a building (possibly ship) on her head. Polish, Lithuanian and Swedish coat of arms. Inscriptions: SIGISMVNDVS III. D G POLONIAE ET SVECIAE REX (obverse) CRESCIT GEMINATIS GLORIA CVRIS - Glory grows with a doubling of efforts (reverse). The medals of sovereigns often framed in gold were presented as a special award or replace state awards. The practice, initiated in Poland by King Sigismund Augustus, spread widely at the court of the Vasas. Among the recipients were Franciszek Mniszech, False Dmitriy I, Bartłomiej Nowodworski, papal nuncio Claudio Rangoni, Muscovy envoy Denis Grigorievich Aladyin (april 1613), Duke of Pomerania and the Elector of Brandenburg. |
