English: A simple example of a two-dimensional bordered area (in black) with its medial axis (in red). The medial axis consists of line- and parabola-elements. Three maximal circles are shown (in green) with their footpoints (in blue) on the boundary. They belong to different classes.
1) the general case with two touching footpoints: circle centre lies on a curve; 2) the case with three footpoints: circle center is a branching point, where curves meet; and 3) the case with one footpoint: circle centre is a curvature centre of the boundary.Deutsch: Ein einfaches Beispiel eines zweidimensionalen berandeten Gebietes (schwarz) mit seiner Medialen Achse (rot), die aus Geraden- und Parabel-Elementen besteht. Es sind drei maximale Kreise (grün) mit ihren Berührpunkten (blau) auf dem Rand eingezeichnet. Sie gehören zu drei verschiedenen Klassen.
