Description

The medieval cellar, dating from the fourteenth century, was part of a house that belonged to a wealthy merchant. It is a well built storeroom, constructed from expensive sandstone with a stone ribbed vault for additional security. The undercroft consists of two roughly square bays 3.3m square, making a rectangular room just over 6.5m long. There are two separate entrances, one by which the undercroft is now entered (west) and a slightly wider one on the opposite wall, currently blocked after a few steps. (east). The local topography permitted the undercroft to be lit on the north side where the land began to fall away, hence the window in the north wall. This area of Bayley Lane was occupied by wealthy merchants in the late medieval period. The earliest known tenant (1410-11) was Robert Allesley, a girdler.
