Description

Megacerops dispar (Marsh, 1887) - fossil titanothere skeleton from the Lower Oligocene of South Dakota, USA. (CM 11061, Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA)

This species is also known as Brontops dispar.

From museum signage: "One of the largest North American herbivores, this titanothere is distantly to modern horses and rhinos. Brontops have been found with fractured ribs, which may indicate the males battled each other for dominance. No other animals of the time could have delivered such a blow."
