‘Someone take this gloom and walk right on Take it some place that I don't go’

‘Employer Pledge’ is a commitment to change how employers think and act about mental health in the workplace and make sure that employees who are facing these problems feel supported.

I wish the initiative every success. I do wonder sometimes though if employers bring unnecessary pressures on employees, the old adage of ‘knowing the cost of everything and the value of nothing’ springs to mind.

It’s certainly not a new phenomena, I worked in retail 30 years ago and at the start there was a nice family feeling. Then little things started changing. I often started early, 05:15, and originally all early starters were given a cooked breakfast at 09:00 and it was a great time to chat with friends. Then the breakfast became paid for. Then the breaks became staggered. Then the breakfast went altogether! Not such a big thing in itself, but add it to a bunch of similar changes and they all mounted up and made for a much less caring atmosphere.

I’m certainly not claiming that all employers have to do to avoid employees having mental health difficulties is to give them a free breakfast, but in my experience a little awareness of small things making a big difference wouldn’t go amiss.
