Summary[edit]

Description
English: Messageries Maritimes steamship La Plata at quay c. 1900, drying its auxiliary sails. Built in 1888 for the Bordeaux-South America route. Changed its name to Nara in 1903 when it switched to the Marseilles-South Pacific route.
Steamships equipped with auxiliary sails would use them on long-distance routes where they would take advantage of steady winds during long periods, such as monsoon winds. This ship's auxiliary sails were removed in 1905.
