I was driving along and saw a sign that indicated a archaeological site so I made a detour and drove about 30 minutes to get to this spot. I was not sure that this was the road but I went down it and found the site. Yaxuna is a Maya archaeological site in the municipality of Yaxcabá in Yucatán. The settlement had a long continuous occupation running from the Middle Formative Period through the Postclassic. The Late Formative saw the construction of a number of triadic architectural groups linked with roads running north to south. Some of the larger pyramids were remodeled during the Early Classic, and held royal tombs. In the Late Classic, the site was linked to Coba via a 100 km Sacbe, or raised road. Internally, new roads running east to west were constructed. Historic accounts tell of a war between Yaxuna and Chichen Itza during the Terminal Classic Period. This is evidenced by the construction of siege walls ringing the largest architectural groups, and the sacking of Yaxuna's council house. By the Post Classic Period, the population was much reduced, with new construction limited to minor additions to older architecture. |
