Description
中文（繁體）：清乾隆五十一年（1786年），臺灣發生「林爽文事件」，各地居民為求自保，各自組織義民軍，協助官兵平亂。事件結束後，地方仕紳與鄉親，合力收集陣亡義民軍忠骸，建墓立廟，以永為祭祀，稱為義民總塚或義塚。根據統計，新竹、苗栗、南投、彰化、雲嘉、高屏等地，奉祀義民的廟、祠、寺，約計26座，「苗栗義塚」為其中之一。根據《苗栗義民廟創建兩百週年紀念特刊》紀載，當時地方鄉親僱請牛車沿途遍拾臂上綁有黑布的義民軍忠骸。原擬由南往北送到新竹新埔合葬，但六台牛車經過北苗（今義塚所在地）時，牛隻不受驅使，經焚香禱告後，由「聖筶」取決，其中有六缸忠骸合塚葬於此，推測為「苗栗義塚」創建之始。後經清乾隆六十年（1795年）苗栗街士紳謝鳳藩，為紀念義民軍之義行，乃將私有的中興莊（即今義民街）2分餘大的土地，捐贈作為建廟基地，並募款興建義民祠一座（即今苗栗義民廟），以安奉義民之神位，供人參拜。
