English: Midgårdsormen (swedish:The Midgard Serpent) by Björn Therkelson is a sculpture that was erected outside the town hall in the small town of Floby in Sweden in 1996. The sculpture caused a public outcry. Religious groups accused it of encouraging paganism. Other groups thought the Midgard Serpent looked more like an unerected male organ. Despite the criticism, the sculture still stands in front of the town hall and public library.
Svenska: Skulpturen Midgårdsormen av Björn Therkelson utanför biblioteket i Floby. Skulpturen är tillverkat av 8 ton ekebergamarmor och invigdes på nationaldagen 6 juni 1996. Strax före invigningen väcktes kritik mot skulpturen. En aktionsgrupp bildades som lyckades samla in 1560 underskrifter mot skulpturen. En del religiösa förfasades över att en staty som föreställde hednisk avgudadyrkan skulle stå uppställd mitt i Floby. En del människor med mer sekulär syn skrev under protestlistan för att de ansåg att skulpturen mest påminde om en slak manslem. Ytterligare andra protesterade då de ansåg att ärendet skötts illa av Kulturnämnden i Falköpings kommun. Trots kritiken så står Midgårdsormen kvar och pryder (eller misspryder) ingången till biblioteket och kommunalhuset (2011). |
