  • Significance: Located at New Dorp, Staten Island, it was constructed during 1919-21 by the U.S. Army for the purposes of establishing an Air Coast Defense Station in the vicinity of New York City. It was one of seven bases intended to be built for the defense of the Atlantic coast in the wake of WWI. The site was chosen because it offered the dual advantage of a centralized location for patrolling the New York Harbor area and offered combined facilities foe handling sea and land aircraft...
