English: Missisquoi Abenaki Nation memorial plaque affixed to the monument (carved by R. Menard in 2015) in Swanton, Vermont, 2016. Missisquoi Abenaki nation memorial in Swanton, Vermont, July 2016. The monument was given to the people of Swanton by the Abenaki Nation (translated): "Magawogan Waji Tagwahoganiak Oji Wobanraki I Ngwed Kamigzoak Sataigizos 1991". The turtle, otter, wolf, beaver, bear, and eagle ascend the pole. The turtle has thirteen squares on its back, representing the thirteen original old villages and appears at the base of the pole. It also often represents the western Abenaki. The otter is the name of the Otter Creek where many Abenaki lived before the great changes. The wolf was commonly used as a symbol of the loop or Mahican nation, of which there are some families at Missisquoi the beaver is an animal symbol of the ancient Lake Champlain/Missisquoi community. The bear is the old Sokoki/Pennacook symbol. The eagle stands at the top as the universal symbol of Great Sacredness. |
