Description
Français : Figurines en terre moulée représentant des chiens. Enterrées sous des bâtiments afin d'assurer leur protection magique. Celles-ci ont été exhumées sous la porte du Palais Nord de Ninive. Ces chiens sont nommés suivant les qualités qui étaient attendues d'eux : "Bruyant est son aboiement !" (chien noir) ; "Celui qui mord son ennemi !" (chien bleu) ; "Ne réfléchis pas, mors !" (chien blanc) ; "Celui qui saisit son ennemi !" (chien rouge) ; "Celui qui repousse le mal !" (chien blanc à pois rouges). Ninive, période néo-assyrienne, v. 645 av. J.-C. ME 30001-30005.
English: Apotropaic clay figurines representing dogs. Buried under a doorway of the Northern Palace of Nineveh, as a mean of protection against evil. Each dog is named after a quality expected: "Loud is his bark!" (black dog); "Biter of his foe!" (blue dog); "Dont think, bite!" (white dog); "Catcher of the enemy!" (red dog); "Expeller of evil!" (white dog with red spots). Nineveh, neo-assyrian period, c. 645 BC. ME 30001-30005.
