Summary

[edit]
Description Built in 1930, this Art Deco-style flatiron building was built to house the Madison location of the Montgomery Ward Department Store chain, and was renovated circa 2010 by The Kubala Washatko Architects into the Madison Children’s Museum. The building is clad in limestone with decorative etched flutes and decorative motifs on the first floor, large storefronts on the first floor, an entrance at the narrow end of the building, decorative trim above the first floor bays, decorative metal spandrel panels between the second and third floor bays on the Hamilton Street and Pinckney Street facades, decorative carved relief panels on the parapet above the third floor windows, a heavily modified rooftop with a partially cantilevered deck, planters, a contemporary penthouse, tall railings, and additions to the side and rear made when the building was converted into a museum to house additional interior space, a stair and elevator, and a parking garage to the rear with a playground on the roof. The building was once one of many Art Deco-style department stores in the vicinity of Capitol Square in Downtown Madison, which have all closed, with several being replaced with newer buildings. The unique adaptive reuse of the building as a children’s museum allowed for its exterior to be preserved, but for it to find a new use as a space that enriches the lives of the next generation.
