Description
Français : Le monument aux morts est un patrimoine historique de la ville de Constantine, il fut érigé en mémoire des combattants de la « Grande Guerre » de 1914-1918 et pour rendre hommage aux 844 Constantinois de toutes confessions, ayant perdu la vie durant cette guerre. Sa construction débuta fin 1918 et fut inauguré en 1930 par le président de la République française Gaston DOUMERGUE à l'occasion des cérémonies commémoratives du centenaire de l'Algérie française. Il sera le premier monument de France à être édifié sur le modèle de l'Arc de triomphe romain de « Trajan » à Timgad (Algérie), il est l’œuvre des architectes français Roguet et Dumoulin. De son emplacement dominant les gorges du Rhummel, l’arche est surmontée par une sculpture réalisée par le célèbre statuaire Ebstein, (1881-1961), artiste algérois sur le mode d’une statuette romaine de bronze découverte en 1855 par des militaires dans une cour de la Casbah de Constantine.
