Description
English: “Mosaic floor in a semicircular ‘guilloche’ frame representing figures (actors) of a lost Menander’s comedy entitled MESSENIA or DEDICATED (2nd - 3rd cent. B.C.). The story was dealing with a young Messenian lady who failed to repay her promise to get married to her official lover. From left to right the following figures are represented: the MESSENIAN woman holding up a cup in her left hand, the peasant ATTIKOS leading a donkey with a luxurious saddle on, the servant ZOSIMOS dragging a second donkey behind him. The rest of the figures on the left part of the semicircular frame are not preserved. The figural scene is part of a public area covered with mosaics in the Roman period; it surrounds an earlier circular building of the 1st cent. B.C., the fallen Doric colonnade of which is visible below the foundations of the Early Christian Basilica dated to the 6th century A.D.” Text: Information panel next to the mosaic.
