Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The sagebrush steppe at the upper elevations in the Jarbidge and Elk Mountain area is dominated by Artemisia tridentata subsp. vaseyana and Artemisia arbuscula, with the latter presumably dominating shallow, rocky, or any substrate with low water holding capacity. Extensive areas have recently burned such that sagebrush occurs in low densities and Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus, Eriogonum heracleoides, and other shrub and subshrub species dominate. The native plant cover is high, essentially 100% in this area. Alpha diversity is fairly low with often less than 40 plant species per hectare (good condition mountain big sagebrush steppe often harbors over 60 species per hectare). Beta diversity is also low because the same species often occur everywhere in this area regardless of recency of burn and type of substrate. Perhaps this is a legacy of the long history of overgrazing in this area. Cheatgrass is not present in any of this mountain big sagebrush steppe in the Jarbidge area, except in places like roadsides.
