Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 99-160 cm; Weight: 67-103 kg; Identification: The coat of the mountain lion can range from tawny to gray-brown in color; Habitat: Mountains, forests, swamps, grasslands; Diet: Carnivore: moose, elk, white-tailed deer, caribou, mule deer, some small mammals; Reproduction: Mountain lions mate between December and March. After gestating for 82-96 days, the female gives birth to two to four cubs in her den. The cubs are weaned at 40 days of age; Social Structure: These are solitary cats; Behavior: Mountain lions are nocturnal; Status: Threatened: some populations are endangered, mountain lions are hunted for their high trophy value and are considered a threat to livestock; Interesting Facts: The mountain lion used to be plentiful in much of the United States. It could even be found as far north as the Great Lakes and up into Maine and lower Canada.
