Summary[edit]
DescriptionMudstone (Graneros Formation, Upper Cretaceous; Ponca State Park, Nebraska, USA).jpg |
English: Mudstone from the Cretaceous of Nebraska, USA. (outdoor public display, Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park, Nebraska, USA)
"Mudstone" is a fine-grained sedimentary rock. The term is terrible by itself, as is communicates little information. Geologists should not use the term "mudstone" without modifiers or clarification. In limestone classification, fine-grained limestones are called "mudstone", but they should be designated "lime mudstone" to prevent confusion. For non-carbonate rocks, "mudstone" is a near-synonym of "shale". To prevent confusion, the term "siliciclastic mudstone" or "mudrock" should be used instead. Some mudrocks are somewhat calcareous. I do not know what type of "mudstone" the specimen seen here is. Stratigraphy: Graneros Formation, lower Upper Cretaceous Locality: attributed to Ponca State Park, far-northeastern Nebraska, USA |
