Third and fourth stanza of poem "My Father in Heaven" by Eliza R. Snow

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Eliza R. Snow was a poet and member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her poem "My Father in Heaven" provides the text for the hymn "O My Father" and expresses the Latter-day Saint belief in God being the Heavenly Parents of humanity's spirits. Specifically the third and fourth verses express the Latter-day Saint doctrine that God the Father is accompanied by a divine feminine companion generally called Heavenly Mother.

Text is as follows:

I had learn’d to call thee father Through thy spirit from on high; But until the key of knowledge9 Was restor’d, I knew not why. In the heav’ns are parents single? No, the thought makes reason stare; Truth is reason—truth eternal Tells me I’ve a mother there.

When I leave this frail existence— When I lay this mortal by, Father, mother, may I meet you In your royal court on high? Then, at length, when I’ve completed All you sent me forth to do, With your mutual approbation

Let me come and dwell with you.
