English: PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM, Hawaii (April 21, 2017) In honor of Sexual Violence Awareness Month, Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Hawaii Seabees held an awareness event on April 21 and wore denim to show their support.
Why Denim Day? In Italy an 18-year old girl in denim jeans was sexually assaulted by her married 45-year old driving instructor. Her parents helped and supported her in pressing charges and the perpetrator was arrested and prosecuted - convicted of rape and sentenced to jail. However, he appealed the sentence and the case reached the Italian Supreme Court where the conviction was overturned, dismissed, and the perpetrator released. In a statement by the Chief Judge, argued, “because the victim wore very, very tight jeans, she had to help him remove them, and by removing the jeans it was no longer rape but consensual sex.” Enraged by the verdict, within a matter of hours the women in the Italian Parliament launched into immediate action and protested by wearing jeans to work.
