EL QUINTETO DE STEPHAN Arp 319

Es el primer grupo compacto de galaxias que se descubrió por Édouard Stephan en 1877 desde el Observatorio de Marsella.

Aparecen fuertes interacciones entre las galaxias cuya fusión es probable que lleve a la desaparición final del grupo que acabaría con la formación de una galaxia elíptica gigante. Los grupos compactos son sorprendentemente numerosos, y pueden jugar un papel significativo en la evolución de las galaxias.

Halton Arp incluyó este grupo en su catálogo de galaxias peculiares con el número 319, en 1973 les asignaba a las cinco galaxias la misma distancia, de sólo 10 Mpc, poniendo en entredicho la ley de Hubble ya que una de las galaxias presenta un corrimiento al rojo netamente distinto de las demás.

Actualmente parece que de las cinco galaxias sólo las cuatro más rojizas pertenecen al grupo que se encuentra a unos 300 millones de años luz, la galaxia más azulada y aparentemente más grande es NGC 7320 que está a una distancia de 40 millones de años luz.

Paul Hickson registró el grupo en su «Atlas of Compact Groups of Galaxies" en 1993 como HCG 92.
