Senior Resident Inspector Jared Nadel inspects the Watts Bar Unit 1 ice condenser, a passive system using large quantities of ice to absorb steam as well as reduce containment pressure and temperature after a loss-of-coolant accident or large steam pipe break. Ice condensers enable smaller containment structures than other plant designs. Sequoyah plant in Tennessee, Catawba in South Carolina, McGuire in North Carolina, and D.C.
