MTA New York City Transit crews worked quickly to restore service on the A, C and D lines on Manhattan's Upper West Side after a city-owned water main ruptured on Central Park West and W103 St on Sunday, January 19, 2020. The ruptured occurred around 7:50 a.m., and the city turned off the water at 9 a.m. By then, water had flooded the tracks at the 103 St (A/B/C/D) station above the third rail and required power removal from all tracks. Before restoring subway service, NYCT crews had to remove any remaining water and assess signals and other equipment critical to safe train operations, including four stop machines, a substation at 99th Street and all third-rail cables. This incident was the second time in a week where a city water main break forced the suspension of subway service, inconveniencing thousands of customers. The previous incident was also a major water main break on the Upper West Side in the vicinity of Lincoln Center that partially suspended service on the Seventh Avenue 1/2/3 line. The MTA calls for a quicker response by the city to such incidents and a review of its aging system to avoid similar situations in the future. Photo: Marc A. Hermann / MTA New York City Transit |
