Summary
[edit]DescriptionNapier-Railton racing car (45422984931).jpg |
This is literally a unique racing car, being the only one of its' kind. It dates from 1933, has a Napier Lion W12 aeroplane engine with 23.9 litres and 580 horse power and was capable of 168 mph (270 Km/h). However it only had brakes on the rear wheels! Although described as a "W12" the exhausts (and what i can see of spark plugs) suggest it may be a 8 cylinder engine ... It's still in running order and is owned by the Brooklands Museum in London's suburbs (where it set a lap speed record of 143 mph (230 kph) in 1935, which has never been broken.) Between 1933 and 1937 it broke no less than 47 world speed records. In 1949 the car starred in the film ‘Pandora and the Flying Dutchman’, a film about a racing car driver. In 1951 it was also used as a test bed for aircraft braking parachutes due to it's (then) great speed. |
