NDP headquarters in Downtown Cairo still burning on the morning of 29th January 2011. In the previous months this hated symbol of Mubarak's dictatorship had money lavished on it by Ahmed Ezz and other top officials in the government. During the late afternoon and evening of Angry Friday 28th January, as protesters took control of Tahrir Square and the police retreated, the building had been first surrounded by an angry mob and then looted and finally set on fire and it continued to burn all night and into the morning. At times the thick smoke drifted right into the lobby and rooms of the Ramses Hilton hotel from where this photo was taken and charred pieces of part burned documents drifted down on to the pavements. It was an image which symbolized the collapse of Mubarak's hold on the country. Late in the afternoon of 28th he had to call on the army to take to the streets but despite that the night of Angry Friday was bloody with many killed in fighting around the Square and the Ministry of Interior. Smoke continued to rise from the building for much of the next day and some expressed concern that it might collapse on to the Egyptian Museum which you can just make out to the left of the picture.
