Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Silver ore from the Tertiary of Colorado, USA. (cut surface)

Whitish = barite (BaSO4 - barium sulfate) Dark gray to black = acanthite (Ag2S - silver sulfide) Bright silvery = native silver (Ag)

This Creede, Colorado silver ore sample has banded barite and acanthite with numerous spots of native silver. It comes from a hydrothermal vein that intrudes Tertiary-aged volcanic rocks. The mineral suite is typical of southern facies of stage B mineralization of Plumlee & Whitehouse-Veaux (1994). The rock comes from the highest-grade silver ore occurrence in the Bulldog Mountain Mine, which had grades of up to several thousand ounces of silver per ton of rock.

Geologic unit: Puzzle Vein, Bulldog Mountain Vein System, Tertiary

Locality: 67 Stope, 9360' to 9500' Levels, Bulldog Mountain Mine, Creede Mining District, northwest of the town of Creede, northern Mineral County, San Juan Mountains, southwestern Colorado, USA (vicinity of 37° 51' 35.74" North latitude, 106° 56' 20.45" West longitude)
