Summary
[edit]DescriptionNefertiti, Slickrock Member of the Entrada Sandstone (Middle Jurassic), southern Arches National Park, eastern Utah 1.jpg |
English: In addition to natural arches and blind arches, eastern Utah's Arches National Park has a relative abundance of balanced rocks. Balanced rocks are large rock masses supported by a relatively narrow pedestal. They form by differential weathering and differential erosion of hard and soft rocks.
Arches National Park's balanced rocks are developed in the Entrada Sandstone (Middle Jurassic), which is entirely composed of siliciclastics stained red by abundant hematite (= iron oxide, Fe2O3). Many of the balanced rocks consist of relatively hard, massive Slickrock Member sandstones supported by a pedestal of relatively soft siltstones and fine-grained sandstones having contorted & wavy bedding (= Dewey Bridge Member). |
