বৈজ্ঞানিক শ্রেণীবিন্যাস জগৎ: Animalia পর্ব: কর্ডাটা শ্রেণী: পক্ষী বর্গ: Passeriformes উপবর্গ: Passeri পরিবার: Ploceidae বাবুই Ploceidae গোত্রের অন্তর্গত একদল প্যাসারাইন পাখি। খুব সুন্দর বাসা বোনে বলে এরা "তাঁতী পাখি" (Weaver Bird) নামেও পরিচিত। এদের বাসার গঠন বেশ জটিল আর আকৃতি খুব সুন্দর। কয়েক প্রজাতির বাবুই একাধিক কক্ষবিশিষ্ট বাসা তৈরি করতে পারে। তুতির সাথে এরা ঘনিষ্ঠভাবে সম্পর্কিত। এরা মূলত বীজভোজী পাখি, সে জন্য তাদের ঠোঁটের আকৃতি বীজ ভক্ষণের উপযোগী; চোঙাকার আর গোড়ায় মোটা। অধিকাংশ বাবুই প্রজাতির আবাস সাব-সাহারান আফ্রিকায়, তবে কয়েকটি প্রজাতি এশিয়ায় স্থায়ী। অল্প কয়েকটি প্রজাতিকে বিভিন্ন দেশে অবমুক্ত করা হয়েছে। এরা বেশ দলবদ্ধ প্রাণী আর কলোনি করে জীবনযাপন করতে অভ্যস্ত। বেশিরভাগ বাবুই প্রজাতির পুরুষ সদস্য বেশ উজ্জ্বল রঙের হয়। কিছু প্রজাতি তাদের প্রজনন মৌসুমে বর্ণের ভিন্নতা প্রদর্শন করে। বাংলাদেশে তিন ধরনের বাবুই দেখা যায়: দেশি বাবুই (Ploceus philippinus), দাগি বাবুই (Ploceus manyar) ও বাংলা বাবুই (Ploceus bengalensis)। বাবুই পাখির বাসা উল্টানো কলসির মত দেখতে। বাসা বানাবার জন্য বাবুই খুব পরিশ্রম করে। ঠোঁট দিয় ঘাসের আস্তরণ সারায়। যত্ন করে পেট দিয়ে ঘষে(পালিশ করে) গোল অবয়ব মসৃণ করে। শুরুতে দুটি নিম্নমুখী গর্ত থাকে। পরে একদিক বন্ধ করে ডিম রাখার জায়গা হয়। অন্যদিকটি লম্বা করে প্রবেশ ও প্রস্থান পথ হয়। কথিত আছে: রাতে বাসায় আলো জ্বালার জন্য বাবুই জোনাকী ধরে এনে গোঁজে।[তথ্যসূত্র প্রয়োজন] বাংলাদেশে বাংলা ও দাগি বাবুই এর প্রজাতি বিলুপ্তির পথে, তবে দেশি বাবুই এখনো দেশের সব গ্রামের তাল, নারিকেল, খেজুর, রেইনট্রি গাছে দলবেঁধে বাসা বোনে। এরা সাধারণত মানুষের কাছাকাছি বসবাস করে, তাই দেখা যায় এদের বাসা মানুষের হাতের নাগালের মাত্র পাচ অথবা ছয় ফুট উপরে। ফলে অনেক অসচেতন মানুষ এদের বাসা ভেঙে ফেলে আর একারণেই এদের সংখ্যা রহস্যজনকভাবে কমে যাচ্ছে। বাবুইএর বাসার বুনন বাবুইয়ের বাসা করার জন্য প্রয়োজন হয় নলখাগড়া ও হোগলার বন। কিন্তু দেশে নল ও হোগলার বন কমে যাওয়ায় এই বাবুইয়ের সংখ্যা খুবই কম। তা ছাড়া এই পাখি যেখানে বাস করে—নল ও হোগলার বনে—সেখানে মানুষের চলাচল থাকে। এরা সাধারণত খুটে খুটে বিভিন্ন ধরনের বীজ, ধান, ভাত, পোকা, ঘাস, ছোট উদ্ভিদের পাতা, ফুলের মধু-রেণু ইত্যাদি খেয়ে জীবনধারন করে। গ্রিষ্মকাল এদের প্রজনন ঋতু। তারা সাধারণত কাটা জাতীয় বৃক্ষে বাসা তৈরি করে এবং আহার সংগ্রহে সুবিধা হয় এমন স্থান নির্বাচন করে। তথ্যসূত্র https://bn.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%A6%AC%E0%A6%BE%E0%A6%AC%E0%A7%81%E0%A6%87English: Weavers are small birds related to finches.
