Born to a poor family, and when she was old enough Gertrude began to work as a servant to a rich family in Delft. She was engaged, but was jilted by her betrothed. She then joined the Beguine convent. Received the stigmata and the gift of prophesy. The surname van Oosten (of the East) is thought to have been a nickname given her due to her frequent repetition of the hymn Het daghet in den Oosten (The Day Breaks in the East).

Old Church started with a wooden church in 1050, which grew out to be a 75 meter high building with a gothic tower. It holds several mausoleums and graves of important people.
