[edit]DescriptionNevadella sp. (fossil trilobite) (Poleta Formation, Lower Cambrian; Indian Springs Canyon, Montezuma Range, Nevada, USA).jpg |
English: Nevadella sp. - partial trilobite cephalon in the Cambrian of Nevada, USA. (geology hammer for scale)
This outcrop is in the middle member of the Lower Cambrian Poleta Formation in Nevada's Montezuma Range. The rocks in this interval represent storm-dominated deposits. Gutter structures are present. Orthothecid hyoliths (= tapered, conical fossils in the float sample seen above) occur in some abundance at certain levels. Click on the photo to zoom in to the right of the geology hammer. Notice the partial trilobite head - a Nevadella cephalon. This occurrence is just below the nevadiid trilobite extinction horizon (= Montezuman Stage-Dyeran Stage boundary). Classification: Animalia, Arthropoda, Trilobita, Polymerida, Redlichiida, Olenellina, Fallotaspidoidea, Nevadiidae Stratigraphy: a little below 21.5 meter mark in section, <88 meters above the base of the middle member of the Poleta Formation, ~uppermost Montezuman Stage, Lower Cambrian Locality: outcrop along the northern side of Indian Springs Canyon (= section IS-4 & stop 11 in Laurentia 99 field trip guidebook), Montezuma Range, eastern Esmeralda County, southwestern Nevada, USA (vicinity of 37˚ 43' 22.25" North latitude, 117˚ 19' 23.20" West longitude) |
