Summary
[edit]DescriptionNew Freedom Assembly of God - fmr Holy Spirit RC Church, North Delaware Avenue Methodist Church - Buffalo, New York - 20200803.jpg |
English: New Freedom Assembly of God, 2356 Delaware Avenue at Wilbury Place, Buffalo, New York, August 2020. A wood-frame building of modest scale and appearance topped with a central tower with a bell-shaped roof, the church's history is much more interesting than its architecture: it was built in 1910 as home to the brand-new Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church - the first to serve the North Park section of the city, which had only just begun its transition from farmland to urban neighborhood - and was at the time located about two blocks south of here, on a site near the corner of Delaware Avenue and Dakota Street. The parish remained small initially, but at the outbreak of the First World War, its growth began in earnest thanks to increased production at the Pierce Arrow, American Radiator, and Curtiss Aeroplane factories on Elmwood Avenue connected with the war effort. Thus, in 1929, the Catholic diocese sold the original building to the North Delaware Avenue Methodist Church and had it moved to its present site to make way for the larger building they erected on its former one. The North Delaware Avenue Methodist Church dissolved in 1986, and in turn sold the building to its current owners. |
