| Description |
English: A Pennsylvania Railroad GG1 electric locomotive. I photographed it from a moving train near Newark, New Jersey. The New Jersey Turnpike is in the background.
The GG1 was built for high-speed service. Its premier route was between New York and Washington. It had a top speed of 100 mph (160 kph). There were two units in the locomotive's body, with a 2-6-6-2 (2 Co + Co 2) wheel arrangement. The 12 electric motors developed 4,620 hp (3,450 kw). A total of 140 were built in 1934-1943. It was a massive locomotive, 80 ft (24 m) long, weighing 475,000 pounds (225 tonnes). Some units were converted to freight service, beginning in the 1950s. The last GG1 was retired in 1983.
