English: Arms of Newton of Crabaton (modern: Crabadon) in the parish of Diptford, Devon: Vert, two shinbones in saltire the sinister surmounted by the dexter argent (Vivian, Lt.Col. J.L., (Ed.) The Visitations of the County of Devon: Comprising the Heralds' Visitations of 1531, 1564 & 1620, Exeter, 1895, p.579). The Newtons of Crabaton were descended from the Newtons of Somerset, and from Sir Richard Newton, Justice of the King's Bench (Burke's Landed Gentry). These arms are a difference of those borne by the Newton baronets, of Barrs Court in Gloucestershire (Sable, two shinbones in saltire the sinister surmounted by the dexter argent), created in 1660, of which family the scientist Sir Isaac Newton claimed to be a member. |
