Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Built in 1931, this Arts and Crafts-style bungalow was the first house built on Alta Vista Avenue in the then-new Alta Vista Subdivision, platted in 1929. The house was built for Nicholas S. Blau, and his wife, Gertrude E. Blau, whom lived in the house until 1944. It was then sold to C. S. Vallandingham, whom owned a local Dodge, Plymouth, DeSoto, Chrysler automobile dealership, and a real estate developer, and his wife, Kleo Vallandingham, whom took over running his business upon his death, becoming the first woman in Boone County to run an automobile dealership. The house remained in the Vallandingham family until 2001. The house features a buff brick exterior, hipped roof with wings to the south and east with gabled roofs, a concrete base, four-over-one double-hung windows, a tapered brick chimney, a front porch with arched openings, a side entrance with an arched door featuring a decorative header with brackets, and gabled dormers. The interior of the house features varnished millwork, Art Deco light fixtures, an Arts and Crafts-style tile fireplace surround, rough plaster, and wooden flooring. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.
