Deutsch: Das ca. 234 qkm große Gebiet ist nicht nur eines der ältesten und größten Naturschutzgebiete Deutschlands - es ist auch das älteste und größte Naturschutzgebiet in Niedersachsen. Es liegt in der Zentralheide und ist besonders geprägt durch einen Endmoränenzug mit dem Wilseder Berg als höchster Erhebung in der niedersächsischen Geestlandschaft (169 m ü. NN). Das NSG ist eine Kulturlandschaft, zu 2/3 bewaldet und repräsentiert mit über 5.000 ha Heideflächen, den Grünland-, Acker- und Moorflächen und den Siedlungen die über viele Jahrhunderte ausgeübte Heidebauernwirtschaft.
Im NSG entspringen zahlreiche Bäche. Es hat eine herausragende Bedeutung für den Biotop- und Artenschutz. Die Heideflächen stellen die größten zusammenhängenden Heiden der nordwesteuropäischen Geest dar und sind daher national und international von besonderer Bedeutung.
English: The approximately 234 square km area is not only one of the oldest and largest nature reserves in Germany - it is also the oldest and largest nature reserve in Lower Saxony. It is located in the central heath and is particularly characterized by a terminal moraine with the Wilseder Berg as the highest elevation in the Lower Saxony geest landscape (169 m above sea level). The NSG is a cultural landscape, 2/3 wooded and with over 5,000 hectares of heathland, grassland, arable land and moorland and the settlements, it represents the heather farming that has been practiced over many centuries.
Numerous streams arise in the NSG. It is of outstanding importance for the protection of biotopes and species. The heather areas represent the largest contiguous heaths of the north-western European geest and are therefore of particular importance nationally and internationally. |
