Summary

Description
English: The Abel Monument to the Norwegian mathematician l (1802–1829) modeled by Norwegian sculptor Gustav Vigeland from 1902 to 1904 and erected in the park by the Royal Palace in Oslo, Norway.
  • The Abel Monument, Gustav Vigeland's tribute to the mathematician Niels Henrik Abel (1802–29) located in Slottsparken, the Royal Palce Park in Oslo, Norway. Consisting of two parts, a colossal bronze statue standing at 4.10 meters placed on an 8-meter-high granite pedestal, the monument is not a portrait of Abel but a symbolic representation of the young genius. It portrays a young man in "heroic nudity" carried by two hovering geniuses (spiritual beings).
Vigeland participated in a competition, announced by the University, for an Abel monument to be placed in Universitetsplassen in connection with the 100th anniversary of Abel's birth. However, Vigeland's competition entry deviated so much from what the University had envisioned—a traditional, seated portrait statue—that he couldn't win. Yet, none of the other competition entries were purchased. Vigeland continued working on his sculpture, now in full size, exhibited it at the "Høstutstillingen" (The Norwegian Autumn Exhibition or National Art Exhibition) in 1904, and it was purchased in 1905. Universitetsplassen was unsuitable for such a sculpture, and after some discussion, the southeast corner of Slottsparken was chosen, where in 1908, the statue, now cast in bronze, could be unveiled on what eventually became known as Abel Hill after the monument.
