Invention May Revolutionize Auto Industry. Santa Clara Student Perfects Fluid That Cuts Price of Gasoline in Half. An invention that bids c fair to/ affect the automobile '-industry .of the country ,\ has > been made by a student 'at Santa Clara university. The genius alluded to is Nicholas M. Lettunich of Watsonville, registered the freshman class of the university and being a special student in chemistry. His father is Mateo Lettunich who has been connected with the apple industry of the Pajaro valley for more than 20 years and who is recognized as one of the largest individual shippers of apples in the world. Young Lettunich has two inventions, one of which has been patented, while on the other the application is still pending. The invention patented; is ?a ! chemical mixture" used with gasoline, by the use of which the car is enabled to run much farther than on gasoline alone. This mixture contains neither ether, glycerin, or acid and will not crystallize or harm the cylinders. An added feature is that it guarantees to oxidize all carbon. One pint of the chemical is used with 20 gallons of gasoline. Dr. F.H. Menton, a dentist of Santa Clara,; has used the mixture on his car with great success, as have also Doctor Gerlach of San Jose and George Mitchell of Santa Clara. On the inventor's Buick "40" the car ran 14 miles on a gallon of gasoline, while on the mixture the same car traveled 26 miles. The invention on which young Lettunich is awaiting a patent is another chemical compound designed to supplant gasoline entirely. It can be placed on the market for 8 cents a gallon, thus reducing greatly the running expenses of autos.
