English: Nobody would have stolen my bike with this fierce looking chap guarding it.
The statue dates from the Middle Ages and is known as the Nordhäuser Roland although this one is a later (1717) replacement, after a disastrous fire in 1710, in Oak. The Imperial Eagle or Reichsadler denotes Nordhausen to have been a Free Reichsstadt (since 1220) answering directly to the emperor in the times of the Holy Roman empire without a Duke, an embodyment of justice, freedom and power. His right hand carries an iron sword. The Roland figure itself was inaugurated here in 1375 following the sacking of the council at that time during an insurrection, followed by a new constitution with craftspeople taking over. History of Nordhausen. The status of most of the free cities or Freie Staedte ended in 1803 when they became attached to a nearby Dukedom, leaving only a few such as Hamburg and Bremen. As far as I can see, the only other Freie Stadt in the former GDR was Mühlhausen. Other Rolands existed in the territory of the GDR, eg Brandenburg. The current Roland's Shield thanks to FLickr member @dokumaus has significant detail differences! |
