Summary[edit]

Description
English: North Woolwich Ferry, Oct 1980.

It is possible to trace a Thames crossing at Woolwich back to the 1300's. In 1811 an Act of Parliament was passed to establish a ferry across the Thames from Woolwich. The free Woolwich ferry was established in the late 1880s. Motor ships were built in 1963 for the ferry crossing, and they can carry 500 passengers and 200 tons of vehicles.

This particular Motor Ship is called 'John Burns', and is named after John Elliot Burns (1858-1943). Burns was a prominent London councillor, before being elected as an independent Labour Member of Parliament for Battersea. He played a leading role in the London Dock Strike of 1880. He was the first artisan to become Cabinet Minister and was an MP for 36 years. He was born in South Lambeth and is buried at St Mary's Cemetary, Battersea Rise.

He was a leader in trade unionism and social reform. His achievements in parliament include 'compulsory notification of pauper tuberculosis' and he undertook a crusade against infant mortality. He was also an opponent of high miltary spending, and a confirmed home-ruler, and wanted action to be taken against the Ulster Unionists. He had a deep antipathy against Lloyd George., and after 1914 his parliamentary career stalled.

The two other motor ships are named after Ernest Bevin and James Newman.
