Photos taken during a Pathfinder Tours excursion in the Far North of Scotland, Easter 2019. The little used harbour at Castlehill, whose industry gave rise to the planned town of Castletown, just east of Thurso, where Caithness flagstones were once an important business. Lock gates to keep boats afloat at low tide have long gone. The flagstone industry seems to have started at the very end of the 18th century, but was certainly expanding greatly by 1820, producing a high quality product that saw it exported as far as Sydney and New York, as well as much nearer at hand at the old Euston station in London - not to mention just about every local structure! Peak production was in 1902, with a decline then as cheaper concrete paving slabs came to dominate. |
