Description
English: Another look at the Northern Water Snake (Nerodia sipedon) found in Michigan. These are non-venomous, beneficial snakes that are often mistaken for venomous ones. Please look closely at the head, it is quite different in shape than garter snake and rattlesnake ones. This snake is very non-confrontational and will flee into the water for protection. Here, I was waiting quietly, and the snake felt safe enough to return to its basking rock. They have a number of color morphs, and this one is quite dark. Its banding was barely visible on land, it showed up more while it was in the water.
