Summary
[edit]DescriptionNose of Douglas B-26K Counter Invader (64-17657 - N99218) (50454415892).jpg |
English: c/n 18796.
Built in early 1944 as an A-26C-25-DT Invader with the serial 43-22649. Delivered to the 9th Air Force in the UK, returning to the USA in July 1945 for storage. In 1948 it became a TA-26C and was allocated to the Montana Air National Guard. In March 1951 she transferred to the 207th Tow Target Flight at Key Field, Mississippi, moving with them to New Castle AFB in Delaware in May that year. The unit was then 2nd Tow Target Squadron. She gained a solid nose in 1953 and the unit moved to Mitchel AFB in Long Island, New York. She was retired in 1959 and stored at MASDC Davis Monthan until November 1963 when she went to On Mark at VanNuys for rebuild as a B-26K Counter Invader, which was completed in November 1964. She was back in MASDC by October 1969 after USAF service and remained there until 1974. She was then sold to A.Wally McDonald and based at Mojave with the civil registration N99218. On 9th February 1978 she crash landed while on approach there and was written off, luckily without serious injury. The nose came to UK in 1986 and has been part of this collection since 2011.
