c/n unknown Built 1963 as a B.2 and served with 100 Squadron at RAF Wittering. Converted to a K.2 tanker in 1977 and then flew with 55 Squadron at RAF Marham. She is a Falklands veteran, being involved in not only the first ‘Black Buck’ Vulcan mission on 30th April 1982, but also the first Nimrod reconnaissance mission on 15th May and the first Hercules air-drop mission on 17th May. She was also used in Black Buck 5 and Black Buck 6 missions, finally returning to the UK on 3rd June 1982. In early 1991 she was in action again, flying 42 sorties supporting missions during the ‘Desert Storm’ campaign, now known as the first Gulf War. Her last flight was in October 1993, when 55 Squadron disbanded. The nose section was saved and arrived at Hendon in 1997. She is now on display in Hangar 5, which was previously known as the Bomber Command Hall. RAF Museum London. Hendon, Greater London, UK 3rd October 2020 |
