Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Ovens - The site of the famous old-time gold rush was discovered here June 13th 1861. Eighty two shore claims were worked. Lots on the shore sold as high as $4,800 dollars. From June until December 1861 The Ovens yielded 120,000 in gold without the aid of machinery. A town arose overnight but only lasted six years. The geology and beauty of the Ovens Park has drawn people to this destination for years. It is the home of Nova Scotia's oldest legend (Indian Cave). Also there was the 1861 gold rush on the shore and cliffs. There are still references to rum-running and the pirate Captain Kidd, and where the Cunard family laid claim to most our beach and then eventually removed it.
