Este esquema ilustra la vista clásica de la organización del núcleo Paraventricular del Hipotálamo.
Los aferentes originados de diversas regiones del SNC hacen contactos sinápticos con uno de los tres grupos funcionales primarios de neuronas de salida del núcleo Paraventricular.
1. Las neuronas magnocelulares sintetizan y liberan oxitocina (OXY) y vasopresina (AVP).
2. Las neuronas parvocelulares pre-autonómicas proyectan sus axones hacia los centros de control autonómicos de la médula.

3. Las células neuroendócrinas parvocelulares, que expresan otra conductancia, sintetizan CRH y TRH (así como otros factores), proyectan sus axones a la Eminencia media, donde liberan estos factores hipofisiotrópicos en la circulación portal hipofisaria.
