Summary
[edit]DescriptionO2 MolecularOrbitals Anim.gif |
English: Representation of two oxygen atoms merging into an O2 molecule in the singlet state. The atomic and molecular orbitals give the electronic clouds surrounding the molecule, which is the most accurate representation one could define for the actual shape of the molecule. The original 2s and 2p atomic orbitals can be seen merging to create Sigma and Pi orbitals, which bind the atoms together. The 1s orbitals do not combine and still show the individual atoms.
