"Uma das versões sobre o surgimento do maracatu rural conta que os personagens centrais dessa dança, Mateus e Catirina, estavam perdidos numa floresta. Famintos e com sede, ele perambularam por dias a fio, antes de serem salvos por um caçador e por sua mula Calu. Os três se tornaram amigos.
